Born in 1930, trained as an architect, becoming a full time illustrator in 1970. Works in watercolour and gouache, and is particularly interested in birds in flight. Specialised in landscapes from 1989-1995 but mainly works as a bird book illustrator. Early influences include Thornburn and Keulemans; more recently the measured drawings of Tunnicliffe were a major inspiration. Founder member SWLA.

His previous books include the best-selling Birdwatchers' Pocket Guide and Shorebirds of the World, and he has contributed to The Illustrated Guide to the Birds of Southern Arica, among many other books.
